THEODORE ROOSEVELT ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING Boston, October 26-28, 2007 “Theodore Roosevelt in Boston and on the World Stage” A registration form can be found on the bottom of this sheet or by clicking this link. Non-Member Registration Package USS Constitution & Museum Instructions File will load if Acrobat Reader has been installed The Theodore Roosevelt Association will hold its 88th annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, from Friday, October 26 to Sunday, October 28. The dual theme of this meeting is “Theodore Roosevelt in Boston and on the World Stage.” Roosevelt lived in the Boston area during his years as an undergraduate at Harvard, 1876-1880. In this period the young TR lost his beloved father, met and courted his first wife Alice Lee, and developed his intellect and his interests. Regarding our second theme, as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909 TR achieved a remarkable foreign policy record and, from a long-term perspective, left a legacy of profound importance for the people of the U.S. and the world. Our host hotel is the historic Park Plaza Hotel, 50 Park Plaza at Arlington Street, Boston, MA 02116. The special TRA Annual Meeting rate is $219 per night. This rate is available only for reservations made on or before October 11. For reservations, call 617-426-2000. On Friday, buses will leave the Park Plaza around 5:00 P.M. and travel to the Charlestown Navy Yard. There guests will tour the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world today. Afterwards, cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres will be served at the USS Constitution Museum, a few brief presentations (including one by author William White) will be made, and guests will tour the museum. Buses will arrive back at the Park Plaza around 9:00. For those arriving earlier on Friday, from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Park Plaza TRA Chair Barbara Brandt and TRA President James Bruns will host a forum on the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Museum and Research Center. Three expert presentations—on environmentally friendly (“green”) museum structures, on the nature of and possibilities for modern experiential museum exhibits, and on the anticipated TR-centered content of the exhibits—will be followed by a general discussion. Alternatively, at 2:00 at the Harvard Bookstore author Stacy Cordery will be speaking about and inscribing copies of her new book Alice: Alice Roosevelt Longworth, from White House Princess to Washington Power Broker. And for those arriving on Thursday, October 25, the annual Boston Police Award ceremony will take place on that date at 5:00 at Faneuil Hall. Saturday events will begin with a symposium in the Lamont Forum Room at Harvard from 9:15 to 11:15. (Buses will depart from the Park Plaza beginning around 8:30.) The presenters and their topics will be: Dr. Stacy Cordery, “Theodore Roosevelt in Boston: Sorrow and Sunshine,” and Dr. Jerry Hendrix, CDR, USN, “The Sublime Intertwining: Theodore Roosevelt’s Integration of Diplomacy and Naval Operations.” Dr. William Tilchin, editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, will be the moderator. Refreshments will be served following the symposium. There are four activity choices for Saturday afternoon: (1) a Harvard-Dartmouth football game (TR took a strong interest in and exercised great influence over college football); (2) an exhibition of holdings of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard, organized and hosted by longtime curator Wallace Finley Dailey; (3) a walking tour focused on TR at Harvard, led by Tweed Roosevelt; and (4) free time in Boston for sightseeing, shopping, etc. Those planning to attend the football game should indicate their choice on the registration form. The TRA Board of Trustees will meet at the Park Plaza Hotel from 4:00 to 5:00, following which the general membership of the Theodore Roosevelt Association will convene from 5:00 to 6:00 to learn and ask questions about the organization’s important new initiatives. The gala annual dinner at 7:30 on Saturday, October 27 (TR’s 149th birthday), the highlight of the weekend, will feature as keynote speaker the distinguished biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin, who currently is working on a book about Theodore Roosevelt. A cocktail hour will begin at 6:30. Optional concluding event: On Sunday buses will depart from the Park Plaza at 8:30 A.M. for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the Roosevelt-engineered peace treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War was negotiated and signed. On one of the buses, Dr. David Rosenberg will speak about TR’s extraordinary work as the mediator. Our time in Portsmouth will include visits to the Naval Shipyard (where most of the negotiating took place) and the Portsmouth Historical Society (which features an exhibit on the war and the peace talks) and lunch at the historic Wentworth Hotel (which hosted the Russian and Japanese delegations). Buses will depart from Portsmouth beginning around 2:00 and should arrive back in Boston beginning around 4:00. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
