Minutes,
2/5/01
The meeting of the
founding members and board of directors of the New England Chapter of the
Theodore Roosevelt Association was called to order at the Harvard Club of Boston
at 5:50pm on February 5, 2001, President Kearney in the Chair. The following
members were present in spite of a major snowstorm: Dill, R. Jeffries, S.
Jeffries, Langer, Freeman, Sears, Renahan, Roosevelt, and Kearney.
A motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting was made, seconded
and passed unanimously.
President Kearney summarized the history of the chapter to date. He
announced that there is stillroom for founding members who will be accepted
through September 1, 2001. He also reported on the ongoing negotiations
with the national office to support various chapter functions. Mr. Roosevelt
reported in Mr. Jeffries absence on the progress of the Boston police awards.
The selection process will take place at Police Headquarters on Thursday, 1
March 2001 at 2:00PM. Those interested in attending should contact Mr.
Jeffries.
President Kearney led a discussion about the chapter's annual meeting, which is
proposed for on or about October 27, 2001, TR's birthday. He proposed
Admiral Abbot as the honored guest and speaker. The group was informed the
Admiral Abbot has provisionally accepted. It was suggested that a possible
venue is the Charlestown Navy Yards. It was also suggested that strategic
partners such as the Navy League be approached to cosponsor the event.
This, it is believed, is a good way to find new members. A chair and
members of a dinner committee are desperately needed. Anyone interested
should contact one of the officers.
President Kearney presented the proposed bylaws. These were discussed.
A motion on these was made, seconded and passed unanimously.
It was suggested that the chapter requires a better thought out mission
statement and strategy. The officers agreed to take a first cut at
producing these, which would then be presented to the founding members and board
of directors for final adjustments before they are put to a vote. It was
suggested that this be done at a dinner in May.
The Treasurers report was received and placed on file pending audit. There being
no further business a motion was made, seconded and unanimously voted to adjourn
at a few minutes before 7pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tweed Roosevelt, Secretary
Minutes of the 10/30/00 Meeting
The initial meeting of the New
England Chapter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association was called to order by
provisional president, Gary Kearney at 6:15pm at the Harvard Club of Boston, 374
Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, in the Saltonstall Room. Present were
Menelaos Aliopoulos, Clark
Loth, Reese Dill, Gary Kearney, Tweed
Roosevelt, Stephen Jeffries, Rogina Jeffries, Arthur
Pfaelzer, Howard Schwartz, John Langer, John
Ayer, John Rando, Will Watson, and John
Welch.
The provisional President Kearney welcomed the
new members and then reported on the founding membership drive. To date we
have signed up 27 members and have checks
for $ 11,500.00.
There are a number of others who have expressed their intention to join
who could not attend.
Tweed Roosevelt and Stephen Jeffries outlined the history of the Police awards.
After discussion, a motion was proposed, seconded and unanimously voted upon to
take over the Boston Police awards. Members were urged to participate in
the selection process. Stephen and Rogina Jeffries took responsibility for
overseeing this year's double awards.
A proposed dues schedule for the chapter (copy attached) was circulated and a
brief discussion followed. A motion was proposed, seconded and unanimously voted
to adopt the dues schedule as presented. Members were advised that they
must be members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association in order to remain members
in good standing of the Chapter.
A motion was offered to adopt the following slate of officers. Gary
Kearney, President, Tweed Roosevelt, Secretary, and Stephen Jeffries, Treasurer.
Nominations were closed and a motion was proposed, seconded and passed
unanimously electing the proposed slate.
Proposed by-laws were circulated and after discussion it was the sense of the
meeting that members would study the proposal, forward suggestions to the
officers and vote on their acceptance at the next meeting.
President Kearney said that for the time being the chapter will have two events,
the Police awards and an annual meeting at which there would
be a speaker. A possible first speaker for an event to be held either in
the Spring or Fall of 2001 is Admiral (Ret.) Steve Abbot, past Captain of the
Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71. Other suggestions were requested.
The date of the next meeting was set for Monday, February 5, 2001 at 5:30 p.m.
at the Harvard Club, 374 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston.
The meeting was adjourned by motion at 7:00pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tweed Roosevelt, Secretary
