New England Chapter

 VISION STATEMENT

(Join the TRA)

The purpose of the New England Chapter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association is to support the national organization's goals and objectives on a local level and to have various local activities and events for its members. It will hold at least two meetings a year, the formal Annual Meeting and dinner in the Fall and a more informal event in the Spring.  Once a year, the Chapter will give an award to an especially deserving member of the Boston Police Department, one who has suffered a life threatening experience, but has recovered and returned to service.  The chapter will also sponsor various other events and activities which may include support for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard's Houghton Library, teddy bears for sick children during the Holidays and other such initiatives.

Annual Meeting

"The Big Stick and the Square Deal

The Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt"

October 17- 20, 2002

REMARKS DELIVERED IN THE ROOSEVELT ROOM, THE WHITE HOUSE

By Tweed Roosevelt, Sept. 16, 2002

We need your help! We are starting the New England Chapter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and are looking for

founding members to help us get it going.

As you probably know, Congress established the TRA shortly after TR’s death to perpetuate his memory and ideals.

Some of the many activities of the TRA include: working closely with the many TR sites such as the Birthplace in New York City

and Sagamore Hill on Long Island; publishing the influential Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, as well as numerous TR

related books; overseeing many local Police Awards, public speaking contests, and contests and awards for students;

awarding the Distinguished Service Medal to deserving Americans with significant achievements in a field in which TR

was active; funding lecture series on TR related subjects; working closely with the USS Theodore Roosevelt, CVN-71,

and hosting both the Annual Meeting of the Association and numerous academic symposiums.

Currently we are planning two activities for our new Chapter. First we will take over the operation of the TRA Boston Police award, which for the past half dozen or so years has been run informally by Stephen and Rogina Jeffries and other volunteers. Second we plan to

have a dinner event once a year with some kind of award and an interesting speaker on some TR related subject. As time goes

by we may want to expand our activities. Some ideas include creating police awards for other forces in Massachusetts and

New England, starting a Christmas distribution of Teddy Bears for kids in area hospitals. Other choices include organizing

outings to TR related sites, initiating a prize for school kids who write papers or give speeches on TR subjects, and providing

support for TR scholarships at the college or graduate school level.

Should you choose to accept this assignment, that is to become a Charter Member of the New England Chapter of the Theodore

Roosevelt Association, you will be showered with benefits, and, of course, you will be slightly burdened with obligations. First the

benefits. The greatest will be the honor of it all. This will be coupled with the fact that you will be for evermore listed on the official

Chapter letterhead as a founding member. Perhaps historians will also take note.  We would like you  to help recruit new members. Our You are also asked to make a tax-deductible donation of $250 as a charter member or $500 as a director and charter member

(checks payable to the Theodore Roosevelt Association, New England Chapter). These funds will be used to get the organization started and to provide the necessary working capital to keep us going. And finally, your good fellowship will be most appreciated at all

Chapter functions and events.

There is still room for founding members who will be accepted through TR's birthday, October 27, 2001.

I very much hope you will accept this offer.

For the TRA,

Gary P. Kearney

President

The Theodore Roosevelt Association
-chartered by act of Congress in 1920-

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) was founded in 1919 and chartered by Congress in 1920 to preserve the memory and ideals of the 26th President of the United States.

But Theodore Roosevelt was so much more than a President, and so it seems fitting that the TRA, dedicated to his memory, also has a wide variety of activities.

The programs and activities of the TRA range from the prestigious TRA Police Awards, given in New York, Dallas, Boston, and other cities to police officers who have overcome handicaps and continue to render outstanding service, to the Teddy Bear program, which each year gives a Teddy Bear to hospitalized children in New York City during the December holiday season.

The TRA also conducts many historical and educational programs, such as essay and public speaking contests for students, and helps public sites dedicated to TR.

At various point the TRA has been the owner of several important historic sites including Sagamore Hill, the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, and Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington, D.C. Through the years these sites have been given to the American people by the Association and are now operated for the public benefit by the National Park Service.

Past Annual Dinner/Meeting (more of a mini conference) sites include the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands, Sagamore Hill and Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace in New York City.

The TRA’s membership is as varied as were TR’s interests. Members include historians and writers, outdoor enthusiasts, supporters of the Navy, conservationists, Rough Rider fans, political buffs and collectors, admirers of TR’s ideals, and those who simple love "Teddy" bears!

The TRA invites anyone interested in helping perpetuate TR’s legacy to become a member.

Membership includes a subscription to the TRA Journal, invitations to Association functions, and the satisfaction of participating in the preservation and perpetuation of America’s history!

The New England Chapter was formed to support the ideals of TR, the TRA on a regional basis.

National TRA Vision Statement

Profile

The Theodore Roosevelt Association —- New England Chapter is in its founding year. Its purpose is to perpetuate and further Theodore Roosevelt’s ideals. We have two meetings a year, one in the fall and one in the spring. An award is given to an especially deserving member of the Boston Police Department, one who has suffered a life threatening experience, but has recovered and returned to service; This year will be the 6th year that the award will be made. At the spring meeting we will have a noted speaker to discuss Theodore Roosevelt, the Navy, nuclear powered aircraft carrier or all three.

Also, each year the national association holds its annual meeting in September-October in a locale that has some significance relative to Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy. In 1998, we met at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the forming of the Rough Rider Regiment. Last year we met aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt nuclear powered aircraft carrier, which put to sea for the day from its homeport in Norfolk, VA. This year the meeting was held in Albany, New York in commemoration or his governorship of New York. Next year we meet in Buffalo, New York on September 14-16, 2001 where he was inaugurated as President.

I have enclosed a membership application for the New England Chapter. This application entitles you to membership in our Chapter as well as the TRA national association.

We are delighted that you are interested in Theodore Roosevelt and hope you will consider joining us.
